Challenge: Torularhodin is a unique carotenoid beneficial for treating non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). However, the exact mechanism of its therapeutic effect remains unknown.

Method: Professors Tian Yaoqi & Qian He from Jiangnan University prepared torularhodin-loaded electrospun microspheres (EMs-T) that can slowly release torularhodin in the colon, thereby improving its bioavailability in the colon.

Innovation 1: Torularhodin alleviated NAFLD in male mice by modulating gut microbiota. Furthermore, fecal microbiota transplantation from torularhodin-treated mice to germ-free mice also improved NAFLD.

Innovation 2: Using human gastrointestinal system and colon organoid models, it was further demonstrated that torularhodin exerts protective effects against NAFLD by reducing ceramides.
