Challenge: Managing conjunctival hemorrhage remains challenging due to technological limitations, particularly for severe bleeding from deep wounds involving femoral arteries/veins or junctional zones (e.g., groin and armpit).

Approach: Prof. Xie Jingwei's team at University of Nebraska Medical Center developed an injectable dual-component nano/microfiber aerogel (NMA) for deep, narrow connective tissue wounds using electrospinning, wet-spinning, freeze-casting, and crosslinking techniques.

Innovation 1: The optimized aerogel exhibits enhanced resilience, toughness, and elasticity with rapid re-expansion upon blood contact. It demonstrates superior blood absorption and coagulation efficacy compared to commercial products.

Innovation 2: In lethal porcine junctional wound models, the aerogel achieved immediate hemostasis post-treatment with 100% survival rate, no rebleeding, and stable hemodynamics/coagulation parameters in hematological and arterial blood gas tests.
