Tsinghua University's Professor Ren Tianling Nat. Commun.: An Intelligent Hybrid Fabric Wristband System for Ergonomic Human-Machine Interaction via Thermal Encapsulation
Challenge: Human-machine interaction has become a revolutionary and transformative technology bridging the gap between humans and machines. Gesture recognition, leveraging the inherent dexterity of human hands, plays a vital role in HMI. However, existing systems often fail to meet user expectations in comfort, wearability and seamless daily integration.
Approach: Professor Ren Tianling (National Outstanding Young Scholar), Associate Professor Yang Yi and Researcher Liu Houfang from Tsinghua University proposed a handwriting recognition technology based on an intelligent hybrid fabric wristband system that integrates electrospun membrane sensors into textiles to form smart fabrics with intelligent functionality.
Innovation 1: The study developed a thermal encapsulation process that bonds multiple spun membranes together without additional materials, preserving the sensors' lightweight, breathable and stretchable properties.
Innovation 2: The recognition algorithm achieved precise handwritten letter recognition with 96.63% accuracy. This system represents a significant advancement in developing ergonomic and user-friendly wearable devices to enhance HMI, particularly in virtual environments.
